With an annual production capacity of 358,000 metric tons, Aloca’s aluminium smelter in Portland Victoria is behind more than 20 per cent of Australia’s total aluminium production.
Keeping staff safe and healthy onsite is an ongoing priority for management.
ChallengeAs part of the operation, Alcoa has a number of control rooms within the smelter. Without intervention, the staff within these rooms would face multiple health risks, including potentially hazardous dust and fumes.
Alongside the risks of dust and fumes is the Victorian climate. Staff conditions can become cold and damp, particularly in the winter months, creating an unpleasant working environment while also increasing the likelihood of cold and flu, norovirus and asthma.
SolutionRVT Group has an ongoing relationship with Alcoa to reduce these risks and heat and cool the control rooms as required.
RVT Group has provided a unique solution that combines both Climex (heating and cooling) and Ventex (ventilation) systems to provide a healthier and more pleasant work environment.
RVT Group’s 200kW indirect oil-fired heater, one of the largest mobile heaters available, is a highly effective and cost efficient solution for keeping large spaces warm.
The RVT Group Ventex fan helps to improve the airflow within the control rooms and filter out the hazardous dust and fumes.
RVT Group supplied 26kw reverse cycle heating and cooling units complete with activated carbon and HEPA filtration to keep the operators safe from the hazardous gases and particulates synonymous with the general operation of a smelter.
Not only does the unit filter out all the hazardous materials, there is a booster unit to ensure the space is under positive pressure which means no contaminants can enter through ingress points.
