RVT Group Provide Silica Dust Control Solution for Refractory Maintenance Project

Project Overview

The process involved mechanically cutting high-density refractory bricks using power cutting tools within a designated work area. Due to the volume of dust generated, particularly respirable dust containing fine silica particles, the client needed a practical engineering control solution to protect workers and prevent contamination of surrounding areas.

RVT Group was engaged to provide a safe and compliant dust control system that would allow work to continue efficiently while maintaining a healthy work environment. We did this by employing our 3C’s® methodology – Capture, Contain, Control – as we do with all hazard control projects.

Challenge

Refractory brick cutting presented several key health, safety and operational challenges:

  • Mechanical cutting processes generated high levels of airborne respirable dust.
  • Fine silica particles created a significant inhalation risk for workers operating within the work area.
  • Dust and debris had the potential to spread beyond the immediate work zone, contaminating surrounding areas.
  • Airborne dust reduced visibility and created housekeeping challenges.
  • Nearby workers required protection from exposure to hazardous airborne contaminants.
  • The client required a practical solution that would minimise disruption while supporting ongoing maintenance activities.

With increasing industry focus on respirable crystalline silica exposure and workplace air quality, the client required a proven hazard control measure capable of effectively controlling dust at the source.

Solution

Following consultation with the client, RVT Group recommended the implementation of a combined dust containment and extraction system consisting of a SOUNDEX® Multi-Purpose Cutting Enclosure and a DUSTEX® Raptor Pro HEPA Filtration Unit.

The integrated solution was selected to:

  • Contain dust and debris within a controlled cutting environment.
  • Capture airborne contaminants at the source before they could migrate throughout the workplace.
  • Reduce worker exposure to respirable dust and silica-containing particles.
  • Maintain cleaner working conditions and improve visibility within the work area.
  • Support safer and more compliant refractory maintenance operations.

RVT Group's Technical Consultants worked closely with the client to ensure the enclosure and extraction system were correctly configured to suit the cutting activities and site requirements. The combination of physical containment and HEPA-filtered extraction provided an effective engineering control approach for managing dust emissions generated during the works.

By implementing a contained cutting enclosure with HEPA-filtered dust extraction, the client was able to:

  • Significantly reduce airborne dust levels generated during refractory brick cutting.
  • Minimise the spread of contaminants beyond the designated work area.
  • Improve protection for workers undertaking cutting activities and those operating nearby.
  • Maintain cleaner, safer and more organised work conditions.
  • Continue maintenance works while prioritising worker health and regulatory compliance.

The project demonstrated the importance of controlling hazardous dust at the source through engineered containment and extraction systems, particularly during activities known to generate respirable silica-containing dust.
