Why is Hazard Control Needed?

Construction sites struggle to adequately manage dust, fumes and noise on site. This can be seen from the following shocking statistics reported by Safe Work Australia.

• 39% of Australian workers were exposed to airborne hazards in the workplace.
• 23% of workers who reported being exposed to airborne hazards were not provided with adequate protective equipment.
• From 2001 – 2015 there were 65,300 accepted claims for deafness in Australia. This averages out at 4,700 a year. The primary cause that lead to this deafness was long-term exposure to excessive noise at work.
• Occupational diseases led to 10% of serious claims in 2014–15.

In recent years, there have also been worrying evidence recorded that silicosis cases are on the rise. In 2019, ABC News reported that an audit of Queensland's manufacturing stone industry revealed 98 workers had developed silicosis. At the time of reporting, 15 of those cases were terminal. With effective and compliant hazard control, this terrible disease is entirely preventable.
