Case Study Overview

More than a million people travel on the Sydney Trains network everyday, so when maintenance or trackwork tasks are to be completed, there is only a small window of opportunity to get the job done.

RVT Group was engaged by EPTEC to ensure there was a healthy environment for onsite staff during a weekend shutdown at Town Hall station.

Challenge

Risks that needed to be managed primarily related to significant abrasive blasting, alongside the operation of diesel generators, compressors and other equipment. All of this activity is underground and within the relatively enclosed environment of rail tunnels and platforms.

Solution

RVT Group managed the risks by way of extraction and filtration systems. This meant extraction systems were put on each piece of equipment. RVT Group diesel filter kits are ideal for working in enclosed spaces and remove approximately 99% of particulate emissions.

The filtration equipment is physically attached to each unit, typically with a ratchet strap. The intake is then connected to the equipment’s exhaust via a high-temperature Y-splitter and 2m flexible hose.

In addition, a ventilation plan was developed and delivered in conjunction with EPTEC. This included removing the captured diesel particulate away from workers and back toward a tunnel entrance. This is done via ducting supplied by RVT Group.
